Session 3 - Photography Concepts with Jim Poyner @ 41 Monkgate

Session Aims:
  • Introduce Jim Poyner and a range of examples from his portfolio
  • Learn and practice basic lighting and framing techniques
  • Devise and agree a series of photographic concepts designed for specific audiences

RARPA Statement :

“I can come up with a photo concept which will communicate my idea to a specific audience”

The Group were asked to respond to the statement. The blue marks show how the group felt at the beginning of the session. The red shows how they felt at the end.

Today we introduced the Mighty Jim Poyner to the YCR Crew. Jim is without doubt York's finest photographer and a real asset to the project. Jim ran through a range of examples of his work demonstrating different styles and moods for effect.

After some demos it was over to the crew to have a go with the kit. Jim had brought in two professional cameras with top quality lenses. The group had a go at different lighting and framing techniques.

The group then had a discussion about the purpose of the photography stage and thinking ahead to creating a series of campaign posters they began to consider the audiences they wanted to hit. Earlier in the session the group had completed a rating exercise to demonstrate how engaged they felt five specific audiences were with young carers issues.

The audiences were Schools, Health Professionals, Peers, Decision Makers and The Wider Public. Here are the results:

We will do the exercise again at the very end of the project to see if the group's experience of creating the media campaign has had any effect on the ratings.

Considering the audiences and the Social Media model the group devised a series of concepts for delivering specific messages that they wanted to get across. They collected their ideas on concept sheets.

The group then pitched their concepts to Jim Poyner and the rest of the group before decisions were made about the strongest ideas to take forward.

Finally the shoot schedule, locations and props were negotiated and decisions made ahead of saturday's shoot.
