Session 1 - Stencil Concepts with Jim Cereal

Session Aims:

  • Introduce Stencil and Aerosol Forms and the work of Jim Cereal
  • Introduce and use a Social Marketing Model
  • Devise a Stencil image concept

RARPA Statement :

“I can create a stencil image concept which will be presented in the DVD resource pack in order to start a debate”

The Group were asked to respond to the statement. The green marks show how the group felt at the beginning of the session. The black shows how they felt at the end.

The session began by revisiting the themes of the project and more specifically the aims for the stencil sessions. We then talked through a 3 stage Social Marketing Model to help the group understand how to galvanise action in their audience. The YCR crew were then introduced to renowned street artist Jim Cereal, fresh from international engagements!

Jim gave a short biography and talked through his style with plenty of examples. He focussed on how media coverage through things like Flickr and Facebook had added a whole new layer to what was previously an artform with very short shelf-life. He then gave a demonstration of stencilling techniques that the group will be using.

The group then spent time devising their own stencil idea in order to create images for the DVD resource pack. The ideas were pitched back to Jim, IY and the group for feedback before a series ideas were polished up and finalised ready for Jim to prepare ahead of the painting session.
